Anthracite Region

Research Projects

The anthracite coal industry in Northumberland County is part of the Susquehanna River Valley’s history and heritage.  Throughout the last 250 years, it has impacted the geographic, cultural and historic landscapes as a result of the mass migrations of Europeans who came to work the mines, bringing their culture, religious beliefs and ethnic food that can be witnessed and experienced today.  The anthracite coal industry and its transportation routes shipped coal to points beyond the Susquehanna River Valley.  Though the decline of the coal industry has had some negative impacts, outdoor recreation has literally risen from its ashes while the region celebrates its coal heritage through annual celebrations, stories, events and in museums that help provide insight to the past that helps define the future.
